Although most patients don’t have very many good things to say about dentures, theyeventually get used to their upper dentures; however, lower dentures are a different story. Most if not all patients will always complain about their lower dentures. They just never fit right! Here are some reasons why lower dentures have more trouble fitting tightly:
- Tongue: Unlike the upper dentures, lower dentures have a tongue in the way that prevents the denture from getting a good suction. In addition, the tongue will move and knock the lower denture loose.
- Surface Area: The lower denture has much less surface area to gain a good retentive suction, because, again, the tongue is in the way and there is not a large palate like an upper denture.
- Jaw Movement: An additional disadvantage for a lower denture is that it is on the jaw and is constantly moving while we chew and talk.
